Last spring we took a road trip to Kanab to visit Clint’s sister and her family for a few days. I hadn’t been down there for a loooonng time so there were several things on my list that I wanted to check off. One of them was going to The Nautilus (aka White Wave). This was one of the first things we did and it did not disappoint! Getting there is a little tricky and the road isn’t great. A car will make it as long as the road is dry, but expect a lot of bumps and uneven road.
Because this is a little tricky to find – I have embedded a map below. If all else fails – search for the White House Campground by Kanab, Utah – and it is just north of that on the east side.
Another bonus is that this is fairly close to the Toadstool Hoodoos, so you can hit both of these in the same day. If you are going – take a LOT OF WATER and sunscreen and wear hats so you have some shade on your face. Neither place has much shade and it is VERY hot – pretty much March through November. We had kids of all ages on both hikes, and the littles (3 and under) did struggle because of the climbs, and sand. Just be prepared to carry and/or help them.
We took our dog and he did great. We went earlier in the day so the ground wasn’t hot, but that is something you need to be aware of if you are taking a pet. Also, take bags to clean up after them and extra water and a bowl to make sure they stay hydrated too! A kit like this that comes with a dog bag dispenser and two collapsible bowls would be perfect.
There is plenty of parking at the trailhead. It is basically the river bed. This trail goes for a long way actually taking you all the way up to the Toadstool Hoodoos – so if you have an OHV – you could just park at the hoodoos and drive down there and back in the riverbed. I think the hike from the campground side like we did was maybe a mile in and then back out. But there is so much to see and fun places to climb that it doesn’t seem like very long – not that a mile is long – lol.
Here are some pictures of our adventure to The Nautilus
If you want to save this for later so you can visit The Nautilus – be sure to pin the image below. You can also save the location on your google maps.
Have you been to the Kanab, Utah area? What other things do you love to do there?
We just added the Toadstool Hoodoos, so you can read about that here. It is very close to this, so it would be great to get them both at the same time.
