Over the last several weeks we have shared many different places you can go in Arches National Park that are our favorites. I have to admit, that Sand Dune Arch was one of my kids’ favorite. Partially because it was not crowded, and partially because the sand was very fun for them to play in. We actually ended up going back to this arch twice because my kids loved it so much.
The view driving over to Sand Dune Arch is simply breathtaking. You will pass by the Fiery Furnace and Salt Valley overlooks. Be sure to stop and soak those in. You can also see the Wolfe Ranch rock art panel on your way over from Delicate Arch.
It is a short hike (maybe like 0.3 mile) to get back to the Arch. From the parking lot, you will walk the trail down to the narrow walkway that goes to a secluded arch. It is surrounded by fins of rocks and deep sand. The sand is cool so this is a fun place to go when it’s hot. There are some rocks and other places for adults to sit if you don’t want to play in the sand. This is place is almost completely in the shade because of the tall rocks surrounding it.
At the parking lot, there is a restroom so be sure to take advantage of that before you head off down the trails. This is great place to spend and hour or two exploring with your family.
You can take some snacks and eat there, but I recommend just going there to play and then heading down the road a little way to the Devil’s Garden area and eat in the picnic area there. It is so beautiful and there are picnic tables everywhere.
Also from the Sand Dune trail you can brake off and go down to Broken Arch. It is a 2 mile loop that takes you down to Broken Arch. This was very cool to hike to and see up close. You can actually get on the parts of the rock that fell out of the mountain. It doesn’t seem like it is very big from a distance, but it is crazy how big it is up close. We were able to do both Sand Dune Arch and Broken Arch in a couple of hours and spend as much time as we wanted at both.
