Salt Creek Recreation Area in Washington

After spending almost a week at the Thunderbird RV and Camping Resort we headed over to the Salt Creek Recreation Area. This is located on the very north edge of Washington (facing Canada).

We drove down around Tacoma, up through Four Corners and onto Port Angeles before we headed over to the Salt Creek Recreation Area. This is about 4 hours of driving but plan on making several stops as there are many things to do along the way.

If you want to add a bit of fun to get there from the Seattle area, take a Ferry. There are several to choose from. We were going to do this but it was too expensive for us with our truck and trailer. You can see the schedules and locations of the Washington State Ferries here.

Getting up to the campground is fairly easy (use Google Maps if needed) and take time to really enjoy the scenery. We had several places that we planned on stopping on the way but got a late start so we didn’t really have a lot of time to do much of them.

If you are coming from the East, here are things you can do on your way to the Salt Creek Recreation Area:

These are just a few of the things we found. I would love to know what else you find along to way so I can add it.

Salt Creek Recreation Area is beautiful. The campground is big with 3-4 different camping sections. We did reserve ahead so that we could guarantee that we had full hookups for our trailer. When we went they did have availability, but I would strongly suggest a reservation if you know your travel dates. It will make it less stressful.

There is a big playground for the kids and there was a lot of deer everywhere. It is also a short drive (or hike) from where we stayed over to the WWII remnants (Camp Hayden). We went to look at these right around sunset, and it would be a lie if I didn’t tell you that we were all a little freaked out lol.

Enjoy the ocean view

The view from the campgrounds over the ocean is incomparable. You can see all the way over to Canada over the Strait of Juan De Fuca. There are a lot of boats and I have heard others say they are able to see whales, dolphins, etc in the waters depending on the time of year.

Visit the Tide Pools

Be sure to go see the tide pools regardless of where you are staying in the campground. They are really remarkable. There is also a beach area where you can play in the water. We were there in July but it was a little chilly – I am not sure I would play in the water without a wetsuit or something similar.

The Salt Creek Recreation Area is a great place to stay when in the area. It is even worth a weekend trip. I know we will be returning here when we come back up this way!
