After staying the night at the Salt Creek Recreation Area, we got up early and headed over to the Klahowya Campground. It is only about an hour away, but it let us drop our trailer before we headed up to Cape Flattery and the Shi Shi Beach trail. Parking is tight in those areas.
The campground itself is easy to find and well-marked. It is a first-come-first-served campground and that is another reason we wanted to leave a little earlier. We got there about 10 in the morning and found quite a few open spots. I wanted to camp right on the Sul Doc River, so we found a spot big enough for our trailer and got it set up.
There are no hookups at the Klahowya campground. There are bathrooms as well as potable water from spigots so you can fill up jugs or tanks. Keep in mind that this campground is in a rain forest. While it was not raining while we set up camp, by the time we got back that evening it was raining pretty steady and lasted through when we left the next day.
I am not sure it would be comfortable for tent camping, but there were a lot of people in tents. Just make sure your tent is waterproof and you put a tarp under it to help keep it off the ground. Also keeping your things away from the very edges of the tent will hopefully ensure you stay as dry as possible.
Klahowya Campground in Port Angeles, WA
The campground is pretty big, with a lot of camping spots. I didn’t realize it before we set up our camp, but there is a section for trailers and RV’s with larger spots. We took the first right onto a loop that goes along the river. If you just follow the road you will find the oversized spots on the left side on your way towards the exit.
Regardless of where you choose to camp, be sure to walk down to the Sul Doc River and soak up the sight. It is BEAUTIFUL! About 20 miles (35 min drive) away is the Sol Duc Hot Springs. We didn’t get a chance to go here because we decided to do the Shi Shi Beach trail hike instead.
