This week I am going to talk about downtown Salt Lake City. I know there are tons to do there that is free, but this week I will highlight just two places: Gateway Mall and Ensign Peak Trail.
Gateway Mall
The Gateway Mall is located at 18 North Rio Grand Street. (west of the Energy Solutions Arena). It is filled to the brim with shops, but everything is located outside in more of a strip mall fashion. In the middle of the mall area, there is a large fountain area that makes a fun splash pad for the kids.
You can drive down the middle of the mall and it’s really beautiful but crowded and hard to find parking there. There is also underground parking (for a fee) or you can park on the roads surrounding the mall for a small fee or free depending on where and when.
Ensign Peak Trail
Ensign Peak trail is one of my favorite places to go in downtown! It has amazing trails, as well as beautiful lookout points that let you see the whole valley. The best time of day to go is to get there about an hour before sundown and watch the sunset over the valley. It’s truly beautiful!
There are trails to hike from here if you like to hike or take the short trail up to the overlook. If you don’t want to do either of there, there is a memorial area you can walk down into on the south side of the road that will still give you a great overview of the valley. (as pictured above). It is just a few minutes to drive up here from downtown and well worth the time spent.
