This post is brought to you by Heber Valley. All opinions are my own. We are sharing Ways to enjoy the Outdoors in Heber Valley.
I grew up camping and fishing. Every summer I looked forward to going camping with my family, up to the mountains for several days and fishing for some of our meals. I was fortunate enough to marry someone who is equally as passionate about the outdoors as I am. We love taking our family and heading out to take advantage of ‘the great outdoors’ . One of our favorite places to visit is .
At any given time, when work or city life is too much, we throw our stuff in our truck, hook up our trailer and in less than an hour we are in beautiful backcountry with acres of land to camp on. Lakes, streams and ponds are everywhere making it easy for us to throw a line in the water and relax. I like to take a book with me and just forget about everything on my to-do list. My kids often drag me out to (I can’t deny that I love them too), and campfire cooking is pretty much the best! We have a lot of fun and make a lot of memories. In Heber Valley, we always have something to do.
Some of the places we love to visit in Heber Valley are Jordanelle Reservoir, Deer Creek Reservoir, Wasatch Mountain State Park, Homestead Crater, Heber Valley Historic Railroad, Crater Springs Golf Course and Utah State Parks Golf Courses.
Whether you are an adventure traveler, or a family wanting to plan a get-a-way weekend there are so many activities and ways to get away. Unplug and enjoy the outdoors and your solitude. As a busy mom who is “connected” constantly because of work and other obligations, I can honestly tell you how rejuvenating it is to get away and turn the phones and computers off, and go outside and spend time bonding with my kids and husband. Heber Valley has over 200 miles of trails so you can and wonders. Beginner or Expert – you will enjoy the area and find something (or many somethings) to keep you coming back over and over.
Here are some fun facts you may not know about Heber Valley:
- It is known as Utah’s Switzerland because of the rugged beauty of Mount Timpanogos overlooking Heber Valley, the green meadows, the streams, the cool climate, and the large population of Swiss people who settled in the Midway in the 1800s
- Nordic events for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games took place at Soldier Hollow, near Midway, in 2002
- 43,000 yards or 24 miles of golf (between five public courses and Red Ledges)
- Surround sound, used in millions of theaters and homes across the nation, was invented here in Heber Valley by Jim Fosgate
- Heber Valley is home to the world’s foremost sheepdog competition at the Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic, bringing in competitors from as far away as South Africa and Brazil
We personally love to go camping and fishing. Jordanelle and Deer Creek provide the perfect places close to home for us to do that. We love them so much that we would travel to them from anywhere because of the beautiful scenery, and trails that bring us close to nature. This bonding experience is different and exciting each time we go, even though it is familiar. Another thing we love is The “hot pots”. They are located in the Midway at the Homestead Resort (formerly known as Schneiter’s Hot Pots). They gave residents a place to relax, even in the earliest days around 1880.
If you love fishing you will be hard pressed to find a place more relaxing and beautiful than the Provo River in Heber Valley. The Provo River, estimated to have 45,000 fish per river mile, is a blue ribbon fishery known for it’s quality of fish, ease of access, and beautiful surroundings are some of my most fondest memories with my family. Get out and visit Heber Valley. If it has been 5 months, 5 years or your first time, you will enjoy every minute of your visit to this beautiful country.

I grew up with a father who loved to fish, so we would rent a cabin in Wisconsin for a week or two every summer. I did some fishing, but preferred to explore or go horseback riding at a local stable. My husband and I used to do some camping, but to be honest, I’d rather stay at a hotel (it doesn’t have to be fancy – a basic Motel 6 gives us a dry place to sleep with shower, etc.). We haven’t camped since my girls were young and to be honest, I don’t miss the camping part, but I still love the hiking and exploring. Luckily, we live minutes from the Indiana Dunes state and national parks in one direction, and a number of really nice forest preserves even closer – just across the IN/IL border. My favorite place to hike is in Parke County, IN, though – between Shades and Turkey Run state parks, there are some great trails. I’m dying to be back to Starved Rock park in IL, too – I’m wanting to take one or two of my three rescued Coonhounds with me when we go.
