Taking my family to SeaWorld San Diego for the first time

Our family of six took a two week road trip from Utah to Southern California and back again. We want to share our journey with you and what we learned. To read about all of the adventures we had on our California Spring Break trip, click here.

I have been fascinated by the sea from a young age when my parents took me to California  for the first time at around the age of 5. What an experience. I don’t remember much about that trip but I do remember the star fish, the whales, and dolphins at SeaWorld and the tea cups at Disneyland. I am now grown and married with 4 kids of my own and I want them to have memories of their own so we planned a big  family vacation. SeaWorld was our first stop and it was a lot of fun.

If you are planning a trip to Southern California, make sure you go to Sea World. Parking was easy to get into and find a spot that wasn’t to far away. We took our Sit N Stand Stroller and a backpack to keep all of our valuables in. We also took a large water bottle that we all shared and just refilled at the drinking fountains (also a great time for potty breaks).

The Explorer’s Reef is very cool. You can walk around several different sections that each have different kinds of aquatic life, that you can literally touch. My kids’ favorite were the clean fish. You put you hand in the water and they come over and would suck on your skin, cleaning it. It felt really cool and it took several tries for my 6 year old to finally leave her hand in the water long enough to let the fish come over, but once she did , she didn’t want to leave. All of our other kids spent the most time at this one as well.There were workers there to answer your questions and help you if you needed it.

Featuring four different touch pools, Explorer’s Reef gives guests the opportunity to interact with a variety of fish, including 400 brown-banded and white-spotted bamboo sharks, and more than 4,000 cleaner fish.

The Seal show was by far our family’s favorite. The tricks were awesome, they animals and the trainers were very funny, and it was upbeat and entertaining. There were other shows to go to that were also very cool like the Whale show and the Dolphins, but I felt like this one was the most entertaining for our kids.

Overall we had a lot of fun at the park. We did almost everything we could do. We saw the Whale show, went on Shipwreck Rapids, saw the dolphins, went on the Manta (and petted the Bat Rays), we saw the Sea Lions and Seals, walked through the shark encounter (this was VERY cool, don’t miss this part). Other things we saw was Turtle Reef, the Penguin encounter (also VERY cool), the Wild Arctic, and the shows. I know I missed a few things in there. SeaWorld San Diego was a great experience for my family and we will go again next time we are down there. Be sure to make it part of your trip when you are in the area!
